What happened
Tanner McKee deserves a chance. He also deserves enough time to throw the damn ball.
The conversation about the Eagles keeps circling back to whether their backup quarterback can save the season. I want to know what, exactly, he is supposed to save it with.
Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season while receiving treatment for blood clots. His recovery comes first. The football problem left behind is an offense that was struggling before McKee took over.
Lane Johnson retired October 6. Philadelphia lost its established right tackle in the middle of the season and turned to rookie Markel Bell.
Johnson had said this would probably be his final year, but preparing for his departure after the season and replacing him in October are very different assignments.
The problems extend inside. Going into the Carolina game, Landon Dickerson was working through a knee injury and had only just entered his return-to-practice window. Center Drew Kendall was questionable with a knee injury.
Tyler Steen had appeared on the Thursday report with a shoulder injury. Those were documented concerns during the preparation for McKee’s first start of the season.
That matters because the usual plan for helping a backup starts with the players in front of him.
Run the ball. Keep manageable distances. Give him throws he can make without holding it forever.
Let him build a little confidence before asking him to pull a game out of the fire.
Against Carolina, the Eagles managed 35 rushing yards and scored 14 points in a 25–14 loss. McKee threw for 215 yards and a touchdown. Philadelphia lost its fourth straight game.
Whatever anyone thinks his ceiling might be, that offense did not give him much room to find it.
A short passing game can help a quarterback get rid of the ball. It still needs receivers to get open and blockers to execute. Running more often only helps if the runs produce something.
Otherwise, the offense keeps arriving at the same uncomfortable place: an obvious passing down, with the defense free to attack.
McKee has responsibilities in that situation, too. He has to recognize pressure, make decisions and avoid turning a bad play into a worse one. Giving him a fair evaluation means looking at those decisions alongside the protection he receives.
Every failed possession cannot become a referendum on whether the backup belongs in the league.
There is still a division race. The Giants lead the NFC East at 3–2–1. Philadelphia and Dallas are 2–4, and Washington is 1–4–1.
Nobody has run away from the Eagles.
The next three games are Dallas, Washington and the Giants. Philadelphia will get direct opportunities to change its position before the bye.
I can see the route. McKee settles in. The line finds some continuity.
The defense keeps scores low, creates a few short fields and gives the offense chances it can actually use. Philadelphia wins enough ugly games to remain relevant in an ugly division.
I just don’t think we should confuse being able to describe that route with having good reason to expect it.
The defense would have to carry a considerable load, and it has its own consistency to prove. Carolina finished with 126 rushing yards after being held to 24 in the first half.
A few strong series will not be enough if the offense repeatedly needs another rescue.
An ugly division title is possible. I’m not ready to say the Eagles have the offense to take it.
Before asking whether McKee can keep the season alive, Philadelphia needs to show it can protect him and sustain a running game. Until then, we’re asking the backup to solve problems that reach well beyond the quarterback.
